What to expect in Kindergarten
Getting ready at home
You can support your child’s smooth start at school by encouraging independence and practising routines at home, such as:
* packing and unpacking their school bag
* dressing themselves
* maintaining good hygiene
* following simple daily schedules.
For more helpful tips, please refer to the Getting ready for primary school guide.
Learning and development
At Peakhurst South Public School, our Kindergarten program follows the NSW curriculum, helping children build essential skills in literacy, numeracy, creative arts, health and physical activity, science, and technology. We also believe in learning through play, which supports your child’s social, emotional, and academic growth in a nurturing and engaging environment.
Daily routines
To help your child settle in smoothly, we introduce important daily routines such as morning arrival, recess and lunch breaks, lining up, using the bathrooms and moving safely around the school. Our experienced teachers guide students every step of the way, and talking about these routines at home can make the transition even easier.
Best Start Assessment
At the start of the year, all Kindergarten children take part in the Best Start Assessment. This is a friendly, one-on-one activity where teachers learn about your child’s literacy and numeracy skills. It is not a test and needs no preparation.
